About us

The Institute of Chemical and Electrochemical Process Engineering (ICVT) of Clausthal University of Technology was founded in 1991 by Prof. Ulrich Hoffmann as "Institute of Chemical Process Engineering". Until 2004 the institute's research was focused on different fields of reaction technology such as reactive distillation, ultrasonic reactors, reaction mills and direct methanol fuel cells. Currently the institute belongs to the faculty of mathematics/informatics and mechanical engineering. After the appointment of Prof. Thomas Turek the successful work of the institute has been continued together with Prof. Ulrich Kunz. Between 2002 and 2008 Prof. Urs Peuker was appointed as junior professor for "Chemical Apparatus". He is now head of the institute of Mechanical Process Engineering at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. In 2014, Prof. Robert Güttel was appointed as junior professor for "Apparatus of Micro Process Engineering". He recently became professor of Chemical Engineering at Ulm university. In November 2014, the institute was renamed as "Institute of Chemical and Electrochemical Process Engineering" according to new research fields covering fuel cells, batteries and electrolysis. In March 2017 Prof. Gregor Wehinger was appointed as junior professor for „Dynamics of Chemical Processes“.

The institute's research and teaching is primarily orientated to porous systems such as heterogeneous catalysts, adsorbents, and electrodes as well as their application to modern fields of chemical and electrochemical process engineering. At ICVT, test equipment for the production, characterization and testing of catalysts, especially for multiphase reactions, is available. The main focus of electrochemical engineering is the development of gas diffusion electrodes for fuel cells, energy efficient electrolysis processes and batteries. General goal of the institute´s research is the design and improvement of chemical and electrochemical reactors through experimental investigations as well as by modeling and simulation.
