Marina Becker group
Energy Conversion and Storage
Our research group focuses on metal–air batteries and redox flow batteries, including systems based on organic redox-active compounds. At the core of our research is the experimental investigation of electrochemical reaction mechanisms and the associated interfacial and transport processes. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding performance-limiting and detrimental processes, including non-uniform metal deposition and dissolution, electrode passivation, parasitic side reactions, and the degradation of electrode materials and redox-active species.
To investigate these phenomena, we combine established electrochemical techniques, such as cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and galvanostatic measurements, with optical in situ techniques and microscopic characterization methods. These approaches enable the direct observation of electrochemical reactions and changes at electrode surfaces during operation, allowing us to correlate these observations with electrochemical measurements.
Beyond fundamental electrochemical investigations, our research includes the development and optimization of electrochemical cells as well as battery system design and engineering. Particular attention is given to the interplay between electrode and cell geometry, mass transport, electrochemical reaction kinetics, and operating conditions. Our aim is to combine a fundamental understanding of electrochemical processes with the application-oriented development of high-performance, efficient, and durable battery systems.
