Characterization of gas diffusion electrodes for alkaline water electrolysis

In the future, hydrogen will play a key role in the areas of energy storage and the chemical industry. Conventional alkaline water electrolysis (AEL) is one of the most common water electrolysis processes.

The aims of this project are to improve product gas purity, costs and efficiency. This is to be achieved by using a new, "hybrid" cell structure. Special electrodes, so-called gas diffusion electrodes (GDE), are used here.

Within this thesis, the influence of various components of these GDEs on the electrode performance is to be investigated. Electrodes are to be manufactured using a spraying process. The aim is then to characterize them using various electrochemical and physicochemical methods.
